Cancellations & Delays Inclement Weather Procedures Winter may bring weather conditions that require school schedule delays or closures. These are difficult decisions that we take seriously. How decisions are made When poor weather is anticipated, at approximately 3 a.m., designated staff drive roads throughout the town to assess conditions. Between 4 and 4:45 a.m., the Transportation Director and Superintendent’s Office determine the feasibility of safely transporting children to and from school. When at all possible, decisions regarding school delays or closures are made by 5:00 a.m. In the event of an early release, decisions are made and communicated by 10:30 a.m. How we communicate Here is how we will communicate school schedule changes: Automated phone calls, emails, and texts. Please Make sure your contact information and communication preferences are up-to-date in Website announcements: Be sure to bookmark the district website North Stonington Public Schools. Local TV/radio announcements. (WFSB channel 3; WTNH Channel 8; WVIT Channel 30; Fox CT; WNLC 98.7; Q94.5; WCTY 97.7 and K-Hits 100.9) What changes to expect 2-hour late start: All schools in the District will open 2 hours later than usual. No AM preschool. No out-of-district transportation. Breakfast and lunch will be served. For updates to afternoon bus transportation or after-school sports practices, monitor the district website North Stonington Public Schools. Early dismissal and delayed start: In the event of a change in school operations due to inclement weather, the District will send families phone, email, and text notifications. Information will be posted on the district website North Stonington Public Schools. School closed: All school buildings will be closed. There will be no in-person learning. No out-of-district transportation. A call will be made later in the day on the status of after-school sports practices. For potential updates, monitor the the district website North Stonington Public Schools. How to prepare for changes to the school day Each family should have a plan covering what to do when children arrive home early due to an emergency or weather-related situation. Please develop a plan and practice it with your child. If you will not be home, instruct your child as to where he or she should go in the event of an early dismissal due to emergency conditions. What is the best route home if your child cannot be delivered to the normal bus stop? Where could your child go if he or she needed help? Who would care for him or her until you arrive? Is there someone your child could call to calm any concerns he or she might have?

Wheeler’s athletic programs exist for the purpose of helping our student athletes meet the high school expectations established for them in the Wheeler High School/Middle School Mission Statement. Increasing the likelihood that our student athletes will develop skills, and desirable attitudes and habits in that document is the primary reason for maintaining diverse opportunities for interscholastic competition at Wheeler High School/Middle School. At the high school level, Wheeler supports five Fall Sports (boys' & girls' soccer, boys' & girls' cross country and volleyball) three winter sports, (boys' & girls' basketball and cheerleading) and four spring sports (baseball, softball, girls' lacrosse and golf). Due to Wheeler’s small size, the Cooperative Team program offered as an option has allowed Wheeler High School to add choices of football, boys' & girls' swim, wrestling, boys' & girls' ice hockey, boys' lacrosse, and boys' tennis. Our students participate with other teams that have lower numbers of participants. Thus has to be approved by our league and state associations. It is a lot of work, but the end result is tremendous. • EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR | NSPS

ESY (Extended School Year) Extended School Year (ESY) services are a component of special education programs designed to support students with disabilities who require additional educational services beyond the regular school year. ESY services are provided to help prevent significant regression in the skills and knowledge that these students have gained during the school year. Here are some key points to understand about ESY services: Eligibility Criteria: Eligibility for ESY services is determined through an individualized education plan (IEP). Students with disabilities must demonstrate a risk of significant regression/recoupment in critical skills or knowledge during extended breaks from school, such as summer vacation, and show that they need ESY services to prevent such regression. IEP (Individualized Education Program): The provision of ESY services is typically documented in a student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), a legally mandated document that outlines the student's special education services and goals. The IEP team, including parents, educators, and relevant specialists, collaboratively decides whether ESY services are necessary for an individual student. Types of Disabilities: ESY services can be provided to students with a wide range of disabilities, including but not limited to autism, intellectual disabilities, specific learning disabilities, emotional or behavioral disorders, and speech or language impairments. Services and Supports: ESY services can vary widely depending on the individual needs of the student. They may include academic instruction, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social skills training, and other related services. The services are tailored to address the specific goals outlined in the student's IEP. Duration and Timing: ESY services are typically provided during extended breaks from school, such as summer vacation. The duration and frequency of services are determined based on the student's needs and IEP. Parental Involvement: Parents or guardians play a vital role in the decision-making process regarding ESY services. They are part of the IEP team and are involved in discussions about whether their child requires ESY services. Transportation: If a student is eligible for ESY services, transportation arrangements may be made to ensure the student can access the services. Monitoring and Evaluation: Progress toward the goals outlined in the student's IEP is regularly monitored during ESY services. Data is collected to assess whether the services are effectively preventing regression and helping the student make educational gains. "The state standard in Connecticut has included both regression/recoupment criteria and nonregression criteria for determining if a child is eligible to receive ESY services." https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/SDE/Special-Education/Topic_Brief_ESY.pdf ESY (Extended School Year) Dates for 2023-2024 School Year Monday, July 8th-Thursday, Aug 1st 4 days a week Monday-Thursday For students-8:30-11:30 Please reach out to April Christiansen at christiansena@northstonington.k12.ct.us with any questions.
