SPECIAL EDUCATION

       Special Education (IEPs)

North Stonington Public Schools is committed to partnering with families to provide high-quality, individualized educational programs that support the unique strengths and needs of every learner.

Special education services are provided to eligible students through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Services are determined through the Planning and Placement Team (PPT) process and are designed to ensure students receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).

       What is Special Education?

Special education is specially designed instruction and related services that support students with disabilities in accessing and making progress in the general education curriculum. Services are individualized and documented in an Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Every student is unique, and services are based on individual needs, not disability categories.

       The Special Education Process

The special education process generally includes:

  1. Referral

  2. Evaluation

  3. Planning and Placement Team (PPT) Meeting

  4. Eligibility Determination

  5. Development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP), if eligible

  6. Annual Review

  7. Reevaluation (at least every three years or sooner if needed)

       Family Partnerships

Families are valued members of the Planning and Placement Team. We encourage parents and caregivers to ask questions, share information, and actively participate in educational planning throughout their child's school experience.
