SECTION 504

       Supporting Equal Access to Learning

North Stonington Public Schools is committed to ensuring that all students have equal access to educational opportunities. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law that protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination and ensures students with qualifying disabilities receive the accommodations they need to access their education.

A student may be eligible for a Section 504 Plan if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.

What is a Section 504 Plan?

A Section 504 Plan outlines accommodations and supports that help a student participate fully in school programs and activities. Unlike an Individualized Education Program (IEP), a Section 504 Plan does not provide specialized instruction. Instead, it ensures students have equitable access to learning by addressing barriers related to a disability.

Examples of accommodations may include:

  • Extended time on assignments or assessments

  • Preferential seating

  • Organizational supports

  • Health or medical accommodations

  • Behavioral supports

  • Classroom or testing accommodations

Each student's plan is developed individually based on their unique needs.

       How Does the Process Work?

The Section 504 process generally includes:

  1. Referral for consideration

  2. Review of existing information and relevant data

  3. Determination of eligibility by the Section 504 Team

  4. Development of a Section 504 Plan, if eligible

  5. Annual review of the plan

  6. Periodic reevaluation to determine continued eligibility and need

Families are important members of the Section 504 Team and are encouraged to participate throughout the process.
